Sponsorship’s, donations and golf participants were way down this year but we were still able to make “FORE HOPE” 2014 a great success! Beautiful weather, great golf, great food, great friends, great golf challenges, great live music and even a great professional massage was part of this years grand “FORE HOPE” Golf Event!
What could make this event better? Well, we’ll start with this…
“CONSTRUCTION UNDER WAY” was the theme of “FORE HOPE” 2014! You may be asking… what construction? The construction of the new Children’s Hematology Oncology Center at the Children’s Hospital – Albany Medical Center. This new unit within the Children’s Hospital will feature 11 private rooms for EVERY child combating a cancer diagnosis! Did you just say that’s amazing? You bet it is! This great idea was Tyler’s brainstorm as he lay in his hospital bed experiencing difficult inpatient cancer treatments for over three years. Many of his inpatient stays were in a small room shared with another child patient. Life is suddenly very complicated, difficult, scary and unpredictable for a child (and family) facing a cancer diagnosis. Chemotherapy, radiation, blood transfusions, surgeries and a multitude of other procedures confound and ravage the entire family. Exhaustion, nausea, weakness, pain and sensitivity to aromas and noise become the norm. Sadness, depression and fear are emotions that are fought on a daily basis.
It was through this personal experience that Tyler recognized the need to create private rooms for ALL children in treatment for cancer. NO MORE strangers intruding at the worst moments. NO MORE disruption from the “other side” of the curtain. NO MORE unnecessary interruptions from people you don’t know. NO MORE food deliveries filling the room with up-setting aromas. NO MORE strangers coughing or sneezing only a few short steps from a bed bound child with a compromised immune system vulnerable to infection. This will be, NO MORE!
These are just of few of the unreasonable hardships placed on a young cancer patient who must share a room with another. Tyler wished to eliminate these hardships for ALL children fighting a cancer diagnosis! Now, thanks to your support, support from our sponsors, donations and monies raised throughout the year at our other events, we are now able to fulfill Tyler’s wish to help fund the construction of the new Children’s Hematology Oncology Center “CHOC”. We have also created the Tyler DeMarco Foundation “CHOC” Palliative Care Endowment Fund! So go ahead, view this new and INCREDIBLE construction project that is currently UNDERWAY…
